VETERANS HELPING POST 911 WOUNDED VETERANS | 781.640.7005
The Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) Georgia Chapter is a veteran-run organization dedicated to enriching the lives of post-9/11 veterans who are wounded, injured, or ill. Founded in Spring 2021 by Ramiro (R.A.) Headges and Waldo Ikiriko, both veterans themselves, the SMGA Georgia Chapter was born out of a shared experience and a desire to empower fellow wounded veterans one fairway at a time.
Having completed the SMGA's American Golfer training program, Ramiro and Waldo found themselves equipped with the basic fundamentals of the game. However, the transition from learning to playing proved challenging. The lack of a familiar network of golfers, coupled with the absence of mentors to guide them on their golfing journey, became a hurdle they wanted to overcome – not just for themselves, but for future generations of veterans as well.
Driven by the "veterans for veterans" spirit, Ramiro and Waldo established the SMGA Georgia Chapter. They envisioned a community where veterans could not only hone their golfing skills but also find camaraderie and support from those who understood their unique experiences. The chapter provides a platform for veterans to connect, recreate, and enjoy the game in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Through golf-centered rehabilitation programs, the SMGA Georgia Chapter fosters a sense of purpose and belonging. The organization removes the initial barriers faced by Ramiro and Waldo, offering personalized guidance and access to golfing facilities. This holistic approach aims to improve veterans' physical and mental well-being, promoting a smooth transition back into civilian life.

A Journey of Service, Healing, and Golf
Waldo Ikiriko's life story is one of resilience, service, and a profound love for golf. Born into a family deeply rooted in service, Waldo's path led him to a distinguished career in the United States Army, where he served with honor and distinction for 17 years.
After enlisting in the army, Waldo found himself in the midst of Operation Enduring Freedom, serving his country during a tumultuous time in history. His dedication and bravery were evident as he completed a combat tour, demonstrating not only his commitment to his country but also his strength in the face of adversity.
Throughout his military career, Waldo held various roles, each contributing to his growth as a leader and a healer. As a Mental Behavioral Health Specialist, he provided vital support to his fellow soldiers, offering guidance and care during challenging times. Additionally, his deployment as a Surgical Technologist and Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Operation Room showcased his versatility and expertise in critical medical settings.
Despite the challenges and sacrifices of military life, Waldo pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and later a Master's in Business Administration with a focus on Project Management. His dedication to learning and self-improvement underscored his commitment to excellence in every aspect of his life.
Waldo's journey took a transformative turn when he was introduced to the game of golf by Army Chaplain Colonel Eric D. Jackson Sr. Following surgery and treatment for various injuries and trauma, Waldo found solace and rehabilitation through the therapeutic power of golf. The Warrior Transition Battalion, along with facilities like Wedges and Woods in Augusta, GA, provided him with the support and resources he needed to heal both physically and mentally.
As his passion for golf grew, Waldo became deeply involved with organizations like the Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) and its prestigious American Warrior program. Through these avenues, he honed his skills as an amateur golfer, finding joy and purpose on the fairways and greens.
Waldo Ikiriko’ journey from military service to golf enthusiast is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity and find healing in unexpected places. His story serves as an inspiration to all who encounter it, reminding us of the power of resilience, community, and the pursuit of passions beyond the battlefield.
